Mandala

KELSEY PRUD’HOMME, ALEX MAKEPEACE, DAYNA LACOURSERIE, JOEY DA COSTA

Mandala is a meditative game where the player is a point of gravity. The goal is to gather plants radially into a mandala. Once gathered a plant will multiply and bloom around the player. The players create their own mandala forms according to their sense of beauty. A secondary click upon blooming allows the plants to more playfully twist and turn towards the players movement, like plants bending towards the sun.
There is no option to save a completed mandala, as that is not their purpose, only to begin again. In fact, after a set time the gathered plants will die off of the player’s creation. Mandalas have been traditionally used as a representation of the universe and for meditating on one’s own place within the world. The plant motif reinforces the lifecycle and recursion theme present in the game.
The willingness to let go of a creation and restart the game is integral to the work’s meditative nature. This builds on the game-like ability to always begin again while simultaneously encouraging the creation of new views of what is beautiful.
